You are basketball referee..What does that mean? Like, do you need to run?
- Some of Karol’s relatives and friends circa mid 2000s
Karol's journey is unique, starting his officiating path as a table official at the young age of 14. He took a path that is the opposite of well-worn: Officiating basketball in Poland - a country where basketball is at best ranked 3rd in popularity. I am sure some of us can relate. Lack of understanding and familiarity with the sport brought a lot of conflicts on and off the court that he needed to deal with. Karol talks very openly about his experience as a teenager officiating in the heated atmospheres of sports in Poland.
As he moved to Rovaniemi, Finland another unique challenge was awaiting him. He probably lives the furthest north of any FIBA referee in Europe, which means an insane amount of travel. He should be considered some sort of authority on staying mentally and physically fit by now, so hear him out. He oozes passion and dedication for basketball and officiating. He constantly strives to improve his officiating skills, at home, while traveling, and waiting at the airport - and he generously shared all those with us so we all can get a headstart.
